Sony DSCG1 Review

Features

Breaking New Ground

The DSCG1 is a new concept in Sony Cyber-shot digital cameras. It can carry up to 7,500 VGA photos, display images with spectacular 921k clarity on th eXtraFine 3.5-inch LCD screen, review shots as thumbnail images with advanced search techniques, and share photos via wireless transmission with compatible cameras and DLNA-compatible computers and big screen TVs. With 6.0 megapixel imaging and Super SteadyShot image stabilization, the DSCG1 can also capture sharp, high-resolution images and shoot effectively in log light without a flash, so it's a great snapshot camera, a portable photo album and a wireless sharing device all in one.

Quality Optics and Design

The DSCG1's sleek silver-finish aluminum body has a built-in cover that hides shooting controls for photo viewing and provides simple side buttons to search and access photos on the XtraFine 3.5-inch LCD screen. To shoot, the cover opens and reveals lens and camera control buttons. Over 6 million pixels provide high-resolution detail for making big prints and cropping in tight on your subject. And, the advanced Sony Super HAD (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise. A precision Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens design and 3x optical zoom give you the power to capture sharp, highly detailed long shots and frame images for better composition.

2 GB Internal Memory

As you shoot, the DSCG1 can simultaneously create and store up to 7,500 images at VGA resolution for viewing and sharing with friends and family. It's like carrying a whole photo archive in your pocket. You can also store up to around 600 photos at full 6.0 megapixel resolution. Automatic image management lets you automatically orgainize all your photos based on when they were shot, and you can view photos as thumbnail images and quickly select shots for full-screen viewing. With supplied Album Editor software, the DSCG1 can search photos by color, face or similarity to another image. You can also search by preset labels (up to 50 possible labels) and combine search methods. A built-in slot is provided for compact, high-capacity Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo media (sold separately).

Low Light Image Capture

You can capture great pictures even when there's low light with the DSCG1. Super SteadyShot Image Stabilization compensates for shaky hands to minimize blur even when shooting in low light without flash to preserve the mood. Or, capturing images in museums or religious sites where flash is not permitted. For sharp, flash-free photos without blur, the higher sensitivity (ISO 1000) of the DSCG1 allows shooting at higher shutter speeds to stop fast action and capture superb low-light images.

Seeing Is Believing

With 921k resolution, the XtraFine 3.5-inch LCD screen on the DSCG1 is possibly the largest, highest-definition screen available on a compact digital camera. That makes it more exciting to view and share your entire photo archive, even in 100-image thumbnail index arrays. You'll also enjoy the user-friendly user interface with function guide. Just move the cursor, select the icon, and instantly access camera control functions. The function guide display also provides simple on-screen instructions to guide you in camera setup.

Slide Shows and Wireless Sharing

The DSCG1 lets you combine images in slide show sequence, select your favorites and delete unwanted shots, add your own downloaded music tracks and use any of 5 transition effects (standard, simple, nostalgic, stylish or active) to make your show more entertaining. You can share your images in three ways: shoot and share instantly between up to four linked DSCG1 cameras, copy photos with wireless peer-to-peer communication between compatible cameras, or view photos via wireless transmission to DLNA-compatible TVs and cmoputers.

Other Outstanding Features

The DSCG1 features a new Hand-Held Twilight Mode that captures great shots in twilight or at night by automatically adjusting brightness, taking continuous shots at high shutter speed, correcting blur by comparing images and creating a single shot that's beautifully clear and noise-free. The DSCG1 lets you shoot MS Video LV3/LV4 video clips with high resolution and compact file size, capturing moving images at up to 30 frames per second and allowing you to fit more video in your available memory capacity. 9-point auto focus evaluates your shot at 9 points, instead of five. So you'll get great results even with off-center subjects that make interesting photo compositions.

Sony DSCH9B Review

Features

Trust Your Memories to The DSCH9

Experience more creative power to capture life's greatest moments with the Cyber-shot DSCH9 digital camera. This high-performance camera impresses with 8.1 megapixel clarity, 15x optical zoom, Advanced Sports mode, and the NightShot system for shooting in darkness by infrared light. Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization and high sensitivity (ISO 3200) mode allow low-light shots without flash to preserve the mood, Face Detection brings out the best in faces, and HD (high definition) ouptut lets you share memories in spectacular high definition detail on compatible HDTV screens.

8.1 Megapixels, Quality Lens Design and Tilt-Up Screen

More megapixels give you more detail and definition for editing, cropping, and making large digital prints. Sony's advanced Super HAD (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise. A superb lens for bringing long-distance subjects up close, the pro-quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens design of the DSCH9 provides a 15x optical zoom design, with 25x HD digital zoom to enlarge the center portion of the picture so youc an see even more detail. The DSCH9 provides a huge, bright 3.0-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus screen that tilts up for comfortable low-angle shooting, plus simple camera menus, a new GUI Home button, and Function Guide Display that makes it easier to learn camera setup operations. In addition to its LCD screen, the DSCH9 has a built-in electronic color viewfinder that lets you shoot in traditional camera style and save battery power by turning your LCD screen off.

Keep It Steady

Many image stabilization systems crop in to compensate for "camera shake", but with the Super SteadyShot system, optical sensors detect camera movement and send correcting signals to a stabilization lens that allows even ultra-long-distance digital photos to capture more detail with less camera shake distortion. With Super SteadyShot image stabilization to minimize blur, High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200) lets the DSCH9 shoot effectively in low light without flash to preserve the mood. And Sony's original Clear RAW NR (Noise Reduction) image processing technology help suppress the color noise that can accompany high-sensitivity shooting.

More Modes for Better Pictures

To capture fast-moving subjects in split-second detail, the innovative Advanced Sports mode combines high shutter speed (1/4000 second) with Intelligent Continuous AF that responds more quickly to rapid motion. This is a great way to capture the perfect moment in sports, children's games, pet tricks and more. By automatically controlling focus, exposure, color and flash, Sony's new Face Detection technology reveals faces in shadow, makes skin tones look more natural and eliminates harsh facial glare to help bring out every expression on every face in every shot, so you'll capture the peronalities and emotions that make memories come alive. Sony's NightShot system provides infrared illumination for shooting in near-dark or totally dark conditions without using a flash. That means you can capture sleeping children, nocturnal animals and creative night scenes that lie beyond the power of conventional cameras.

Perfect Match for Your HDTV

Thanks to Sony, your photo album can go high-def, with direct HD output to your compatible HDTV screen, so you can view DSCH9 still photos in spectacular high definition clarity and detail. Your life never looked so exciting! It's the high definition viewing experience that makes photos come alive on compatible HDTV screens, accompanied by your choice of visual effects and any of four preset musical selections stored in memory or your favorite MP3 tunes downloaded from PC to your camera for use as background music.

Expanding Your Creative Freedom

For more creative freedom, a simple wheel dial control lets you quickly change camera settings in manual modes (shutter speed priority, aperture priority, manual exposure) and also control ISO sensitivity, focus area, and exposure value. In play mode, the wheel dial provides a quick way to view your next or previous shot. A powerful flash provides extra illumination to light up subjects from your camera, with precise light control and the ability to adjust flash for both front and rear sync when shooting at a low-speed sync setting. Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, the DSCH9 can measure auto-focus precision at 9 points on your screen, giving you greater creative freedom to compose your image.

Getting The Most From Your Shots

The DSCH9 lets you add creative effects to photos after you shoot, including a soft edge filter to soften backgrounds, cross filter to place starry "dazzles" at highlight points, partial color filter to mute surrounding colors, even a fish-eye filter to create interesting fish-eye lens effects. Irritating "glowing eyes" can ruin even the most creative photos, so the DSCH9 gives you in-camera correctoin at the touch of a button to reduce a lingering red-eye effect that other systems might miss. Powered by the exclusive Sony Bionz high-speed processing engine, D-Range Optimization preserves image data in bright highlights and reveals more detail in shadows or backlit areas for great results even in difficult lighting conditions.

Ahh, The Memory

The DSCH9 allows you to capture shots in-camera for later transfer to PC or Memory Stick Duo media. 31 MB of internal memory mean that even if you forget your flash memory card, you can still get the shot. The DSCH9 has a built-in slot for optional Memory Stick Duo media or high-capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo media, the ultra-compact media for shooting, storing and sharing your photo images.

Remote Control

In both shooting and play mode, you can use the supplied remote control unit to control basic camera functions, including zoom, menu settings, etc. so youcan put yourself in the picture when shooting with a tripod or sit back and enjoy the show when you share images on your home TV screen.

Let's Not Forget...

Movies! The DSCH9 can capture VGA (640 x 480 pixels) audio/video clips at a high frame rate (up to 30 frames per second) with optical zoom in movie mode to let you zoom in or pull back while taking action shots. You can also capture smaller movies in Presentation mode for easy transfer.

Sony DSCH3B Review

Features

High Quality Image Capture

Sony radically redesigned the positioning of key camera components to fit a powerful 10x optical zoom capability into the compact design of the DSCH3B. The grip fits firmly into your hand, the lens ring adds a high-performance feel, and the top-mounted Wheel Dial lets you adjust shooting modes very quickly. A superb lens for bringing long-distance subjects up close, the pro-quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens design of the DSCH3 provides 10x optical zoom design, with 20x digital zoom to enlarge the center portion of the picture so you can see more detail. This camera boasts 8.1 megapixels. More megapixels give you more detail and definition for editing, cropping, and making large digital prints. Sony's advanced Super HAD (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise.

New Technologies Help In Difficult Shooting Situations

To capture fast-moving subjects in split-second detail, the DSCH3 combines high shutter speed (up to 1/2000 second) with Continuous AF and predictive focus control that tracks moving sujbects and forecasts their position during the interval between shutter release and image capture, which is a great way to catch the perfect moment in sports, children's games, pet tricks and more. Because the face makes the photo, Sony has created Face Detection technology that recognizes up to 8 faces in a photo and automatically controls focus, exposure, color and flash to bring out the best in everyone. Unlike some competitive systems, Sony Face Detection makes skin tones look more natural and reduces red-eye and pre-strobe flash.

Capture The Action, Even In Low Light

Sony's Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization system is built into the DSCH3. Other image stabilization systems crop in to compensate for "camera shake", but with the Super SteadyShot system, optical sensors detect camera movement and send correcting signals to a stabilization lens that allows even ultra-long-distance digital photos to capture more detail with less camera shake distortion. With Super SteadyShot to minimize blur, High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200) lets the DSCH3 shoot effectively in low light without flash to preserve the mood. And, Sony's original Clear RAW NR (Noise Reduction) image processing technology helps suppress the color noise that can accompany high-sensitivity shooting.

Adding Flash and Creative Effects

With a flash powerful enough to illuminate subjects up to 23 feet away, the DSCH3 opens up new opportunities for flash photography, including dimly lit interiors and outdoor shots at twilight. Auto Daylight Synchro provides effective fill-in flash illumination for backlit subjects -- and Macro Flash lets you take ultra-close-up shots with optimal exposure and minimal "whiteout" effect. The DSCH3 lets you add creative effects to photos after you shoot, including a soft edge filter to soften backgrounds, cross filter to place starry "dazzles" at highlight points, a partial color filter to mute surrounding colors, even a fish-eye filter to create interesting fish-eye lens effects. Irritating "glowing eyes" can ruin even the most creative photos, so the DSCH3 gives you in-camera correction at the touch of a button to reduce the lingering red-eye effect that other systems might miss.

Easy Viewing and Control

The DSCH3 provides a large 2.5-inch bright LCD screen, plus simple camera menus, a Home button for quick access to necessary functions, and a simple Function Guide that displays menu information to make it easier for beginners to learn camera features.

More Great Features

Powered by the exclusive Sony Bionz high-speed processing engine, D-Range Optimization preserves image data in bright highlights and reveals more detaili in shadow or backlit areas, delivering great results even in difficult lighting conditions. The DSCH3 also features 9-point auto focus. Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, the DSCH3 can measure auto focus precision at 9 points on your screen, giving you greater creative freedom to compose your image. The DSCH3 allows you to capture a limited number of shots in-camera for later transfer to PC or Memory Stick Duo media, so even if you forget your flash memory card, you can always get the shot. It should be noted that Memory Stick media is NOT included with this camera. See "Accessories" to puchase Memory Stick Duo media. The DSCH3 provides up to 330 shots with a fully charged NPBG1 Lithium Ion battery, enough shooting capacity to cover a long weekend or a whole vacation. You can also purchase extra batteries one the "Accessories" page.

Make a Movie, and Zoom Smartly

The DSCH3 can capture VGA (640 x 480 pixels) audio/video clips at a high frame rate (up to 30 frames per second), with optical zoom in movie mode to let you zoom in or pull back while taking action shots. There's also Presentation Mode that will make a small clip (320 x 240 at 8.3 fps). Sony's Smart Zoom feature lets you crop in close on the central portion of interest in your photo while avoiding the image degradation of other digital zooms, with 17x HD Smart Zoom function at 1920 x 1080 resolution for 16:9 widescreen display, and 51x Smart Zoom function at VGA resolution.

The HDTV Experience

With direct HD output to spectacular Sony Bravia and other compatible HDTV screens, you can view DSCH3 still photos in high definition clarity and detail (HD output requires an optional Sony HD connector cable). It's the high definition viewing experience that makes photos come alive on compatible HDTV screens, accompanied by your choice of visual effects and any of four preset musical selections stored in memory or your favorite MP3 tunes downloaded from PC to your camera for use as background music.

Included With Purchase

Panasonic DMCFZ50S Review

Features

Better And Better And Better... And Better

Progress evokes metaphors like the ebb and flow of the tides because the gains are incremental and overlapping. Not so much tsunami as a thin line of salty water inching forward, little by little claiming this or that bit of land as its own. The Panasonic DMC-FZ50 builds on the success of its predecessor, the DMC-FZ30, not by reinventing the wheel, but by making improvements where they were needed, and leaving those parts bordering on perfection untouched. Sounds smart enough, right? Seeing the improvements, you'll develop a new definition for "smart." Most noticeably, the DMC-FZ50 boasts an improved 10.1 megapixel image sensor and a next-generation Venus Engine III, which team up to alleviate the noise that haunted the DMC-FZ30 -- even when shooting full resolution using the high sensitivity ISO 1600 setting. Plus, Panasonic's proprietary Intelligent ISO Control makes shooting moving targets as easy as still lifes by detecting motion and adjusting ISO and shutter speed. Its predecessor was highly praised for its ease of use, but the DMC-FZ50 goes one step further by adding a new Function Button: a shortcut to the manual features you use most frequently, such as recording image size, light metering, AF area, white balance, and ISO sensitivity. The techno cherry on top, this latest offering from Panasonic can shoot approximately 360 pics before needing a recharge -- that's 29% higher battery capacity than before. You'd better believe things are getting better.

All The Camera You Need

You know what they say--more is better! And with this camera that's just what you get with more megapixels than before. With the Panasonic DMCFZ50 you can not only kiss blurry photos goodbye forever because of its precise MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS); but with its upgraded Lumix 10.4 megapixel (total) charged coupled device (CCD) you can take even higher resolution images than before. This camera upgrades to a next-generation Venus Engine III LSI processor and retains the professional Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens, which together work in such perfect harmony that you'll be amazed with the vibrant works of photographic art you can create. And there'll be no more stooping or standing on tiptoes with this camera's remarkable flip down and twist 207,000-pixel 2.0" (diagonal) TFT LCD monitor you can adjust any way you want. You get the flexibility to catch a high-angle shot over a crowd, or a low-angle shot of flowers in a garden, all with a comfortable posture. Panasonic's DMCFZ50 achieves a level of performance never before seen in digital cameras, having been designed expressly with your photographic needs, wants, and skills in mind.

Superior Quality Leica Lens

The DMCFZ50's Leica lens features 14 elements in 10 groups, including 3 aspherical lenses and an ED (extra-low dispersion) lens that helps to suppress the color bleeding that often occurs in telephoto shots, plus a 12x optical zoom (35 mm equivalent: 35 to 420mm). It's made by Leica Camera AG, a world-renowned German camera and lens maker. Professional photographers sing the praises of Leica's finely crafted lenses, which are recognized for the accuracy of their optics. And, unlike other lenses that tend to have distortion near the edges of wide-angle shots, Leica lenses produce consistently high-quality images. Ever since they first produced the original 35mm camera in 1913, Leica has worked to be the industry's pinnacle company. This exceptional lens combines with the large, 1/1.8" type, 10-megapixel CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The new Extended Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 21.4x power in 2.5-megapixel photos, up to 17.1x power in 4.5-megapixel photos, and up to 13.4x power in 7-megapixel photos. Plus, the 12x optical zoom can be used together with the 4x digital zoom to produce a maximum of 48x zooming power.

Keep Your Focus

In addition to five auto focus (AF) modes (1-point, 3-point high-speed, 9-point, spot AF, and 1-point high-speed AF), the DMCFZ50 features a ring that lets you manually adjust the focus from 0.98 feet (0.3m) to infinity. It also has Manual Focus Assist, a function that shows an enlarged image of the subject's center in the viewfinder. One-Shot AF function in manual focus mode lets you focus automatically for a single shot by pressing the FOCUS button. The manual focus ring lets you focus on whatever part of your subject you wish, and the zoom ring lets you zoom in and out easily and accurately as you compose the perfect shot. They're both fast, so you can capture moving subjects in your composition. Continuous AF function keeps moving subjects in sharp focus, and the AF Assist Lamp helps in dim lighting. Regardless of the Mode Dial setting, you can take macro shots instantly by flicking the switch on the side of the lens to the AF Macro setting. This lets you get as close as 0.16 feet (5cm) from your subject (at the maximum wide-angle setting). All this adds up to easy, accurate focusing.

Gyrosensor Detects Shaky Hands

Jitter from shaky hands is one of the main reasons why cameras produce blurry images. Panasonic doesn't expect everyone to have hands of stone when taking pictures -- that's why Lumix cameras help solve the problem of unsteady hands with advanced MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology. The DMCFZ50 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera that instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the OIS lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. With the MEGA OIS, not only can you take those distortion-free, ultra-telephoto or macro shots; but you can also take equally impressive photos in low-light and other difficult situations. You won't even notice MEGA OIS working--all you'll see are the outstanding results!

10 Million Pixel Mosaics

Like artists who create beautiful mosaic scenes with small pieces of tile, your camera uses the same idea to create photographs. Digital photos are made up of millions of tiny color elements called pixels, which are generated by the image sensor when you take the photo. The quality of a digital image partially depends on the number of pixels, or resolution, used to make up the image. More pixels add enriching detail and sharpen color edges. More pixels also mean you can enlarge the image without pixelization--when graininess begins to show and the photo looks distorted. The images you get with this camera are typically 3,648 pixels across by 2,736 pixels high, producing a resolution of 9,980,928 pixels--almost 10 million pixels! That's a lot of detail. But, wait, that's not all. In addition, the image stabilizer lens is guiding incoming light straight to the CCD, which converts optical data into digital information to capture the full range of expressive colors. By using a primary color (red, blue, green) filter to ensure the correct extraction of color information, the CCD creates vividly colored images. Simultaneously, the highly evolved brain of the operation, the Venus Engine III LSI processor, is instantly processing and recording the images even faster and more accurately than ever before. And unlike a conventional LSI that generates a luminance signal only from the green component of the incoming light, the Venus III Engine LSI generates a signal from the red and the blue light, as well as the green. This extra-detailed information in the luminance signal then boosts the diagonal, horizontal, and vertical resolution for super-rich images. Additionally, this system uses a low-pass filter to distinguish edges between colors accurately. Due to false signals generated at color borders when the luminance signal is extracted from the pixels by a conventional engine, there is a tendency for colors to bleed into each other. The Venus III Engine however, creates sharp color edges and more clearly defines each distinct color.

You'd Have To Work At Ruining A Shot

In addition to giving you clear, sharp, shots the DMCFZ50 helps you achieve your photographic visions by expanding the shooting mode options. Whether you're more comfortable with an automatic mode, or ready to flex your artistic muscles, this camera will let you. With such a large variety of available modes, you'll be able to find one that best fits the physical setting of your photograph opportunity. For example, the Program Mode lets you adjust the white balance, ISO sensitivity, and other settings; while Aperture Priority lets you select the aperture (incoming light) as the camera automatically sets the shutter speed that's best for the subject's brightness. Shutter Priority Mode does just the opposite by letting you select the shutter speed, while the camera automatically sets the aperture. Want still more control? There's the Manual Exposure Mode, which lets you select both the aperture setting and shutter speed. And to make focusing easy in the Manual Mode, there's even a Focus Assist Function that lets you enlarge the image center in the color viewfinder or LCD monitor by 3x for easy viewing. With MEGA BURST, you can snap off consecutive shots at 3 frames per second with full resolution. In addition, the Unlimited Consecutive Shooting function lets you continue shooting until the memory card is full. Not sure if you can trust your instincts? Use the Manual Exposure Assist Function to let you see how much your settings differ from the settings the camera considers optimal. You just can't go wrong with this camera!

Make The Scene

Still not enough options? In addition to the exposure modes, there are 14 Scene Modes to reflect the settings of your life. For example, you can choose from Portrait Mode for a soft background with a sharp subject, or use the high-shutter speed Sports Mode, or try the Scenery Mode for sweeping vistas. Night Scenery Mode is great for clear night lights against a landscape. Additionally, there are Night Portrait, Fireworks, Party, Snow, Self-Portrait, Food, Baby, Soft Skin, Candle, and Starry Sky Modes. And, if all that still isn't exactly what you're aiming for, you can always add one of the Color Effect Modes--Cool, Warm, Black & White, or Sepia (for a nice antique-looking picture). There is also a Moving Image Mode that allows you 10 or 30 frames per second of 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 pixel resolution moving images with audio -- recorded segment time limited only by available memory capacity. And finally, when you're ready to see what you've got, use the Playback Modes to see your pictures. You can display 9 or 25 thumbnails, zoom playback at 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x magnification, or present a slideshow. You can also rotate, resize, and trim images right there on the camera's display. For even more fun, create a flip animation clip that's up to 20 seconds long.

Make Room For Memories

The SD (Secure Digital) Memory Card is the high-capacity, high-speed storage medium for the digital age. Incredibly small (the size of a postage stamp) yet durable, the included, larger-capacity 32 MB SD Card stores all kinds of digital content (like video, still images, music, and more) so you can easily transfer data between it and the other SD-compatible products you already have in your home. And, because there is strong industry support for the SD Card, it will be as lasting as it is versatile. This Lumix camera lets you record digital images onto a SD Card or a MultiMediaCard and then cordlessly transfer them to any PC, printer, or media storage device that has a SD Card slot. There are a variety of SD-compatible accessories available, allowing you store and even print images without the need for a computer. And, with this camera you'll be able to use your memory space wisely with selectable image sizes. Although you get best photo results with larger images, they aren't always needed; especially when you want to e-mail them, or print small snapshots. In these cases, smaller images will work just fine; and, because they have smaller file sizes, you'll be able to squeeze more of them into your camera's memory. This camera has several different selectable still image resolutions from as detailed as 3648 x 2736 pixels down to 1920 x 1080 pixels. Optional (not included) SD Cards range in capacity up to 2 GBs.
